The China Energy Efficiency License or the China Energy Label (CEL) applies to a great number of electronic devices and classifies them based on energy efficiency. It was implemented in 2005 to encourage manufacturing of more energy efficient electronic devices. In addition, the classification increase transparency for consumers to better identify the energy consumption of a product.
The regulation also defines the minimum requirements for the energy efficiency of products. The devices must not be sold in China if the requirement are not met. Since 2005 the regulations have been updated and several product groups have been added to CEL. With these measures China aims to meet their energy saving goal.
CEL applies to many high-volume consumer, industrial, and commercial products, including:
- Household refrigerators
- Room air conditioners
- Electric washing machines
- Unitary air conditioners
- Self-ballasted fluorescent lamps for general lighting
- High-pressure sodium vapor lamps
- Small and medium three-phase asynchronous motors
- Water chillers
- Domestic gas instantaneous water heaters and gas-fired heating and hot-water combi-boilers
- Variable-speed room air conditioners
- Multi-connected air-conditioning (heat pump) units
- Storage-type electric water heaters
- Household induction cookers
- Computer monitors
- Copiers, printers, and fax machines
- Automatic electric rice cookers
- AC electronic fans
- AC contactors
- Displacement air compressors
- Power transformers
- Ventilators
- Flat-panel TVs
- Household and similar-use microwave ovens
- Digital TV receivers (set-top boxes)
- Refrigerated display cabinets with remote condensing units
- Domestic solar water-heating systems
- Microcomputers
- Extractor hoods
- Heat-pump water heaters
- Household gas cookers
- Commercial gas cookers
- Water (ground) source heat-pump units
- Lithium bromide absorption chillers
- Non-directional self-ballasted LED lamps for general illumination
- Projectors
