New Regulations on Mandatory Certification for Electric Vehicle Power Supply Equipment

China is taking steps to improve the safety and quality of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. New regulations have been introduced for electric vehicle power supply equipment to ensure it meets higher standards.

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has announced mandatory product certification for EV power supply equipment, marking a shift in how these products are regulated in China.

Electric Vehicle Power Supply Equipment - Key Dates

Effective from March 1, 2025, electric vehicle power supply equipment will be subject to the China Compulsory Certification (CCC) system, a comprehensive certification program designed to ensure product safety, quality, and environmental standards. This move is part of China’s ongoing efforts to strengthen oversight on EV-related products and ensure that only reliable equipment is used in EV charging stations across the country.

The new requirements stipulate that only equipment that meets the CCC certification standards will be allowed for manufacturing, sales, imports, and other commercial activities within China. The deadline for full compliance is set for August 1, 2026, after which any unapproved power supply equipment without the necessary certification and marking will be prohibited from entering the market.

This gives businesses a window of about 18 months to adjust to the new regulations, obtain the required certification, and ensure that their products meet the expected safety standards.

To facilitate this process, the Chinese authorities have outlined specific guidelines for the certification procedure. Designated certification bodies will be responsible for implementing the rules, with the added requirement that they file these processes with the SAMR for oversight.

AC chargers, which supply power to on-board vehicle chargers with a rated output voltage of up to 1000V, as well as DC chargers, which deliver direct current to EV batteries at voltages up to 1500V, are both covered by this regulation.

It’s important to note that some equipment types, such as battery-swapping stations, are excluded from the certification requirements, narrowing the focus to more conventional charging infrastructure.
